Community tourism in Atodi
n 2007, the Saúde e Alegria project, which supports integrated and sustainable community development, visited the Atodi community with the goal of producing biodiesel from babassu fiber to generate 24-hour energy for the community. The residents gathered enough material to begin testing. However, the initiative soon faced a setback: the machinery needed to convert babassu into biodiesel was too expensive, making the project unfeasible.
During the trail, the NGO recognized the community's potential for community-based tourism, due to the presence of centuries-old trees and a strong presence of primary forest, meaning forest areas untouched by humans. The community analyzed the proposal calmly, discussing the pros and cons of its implementation, concluding that it would be implemented in 2008 with the approval of the residents' association.
From the moment Atodi welcomed its first visitors, both national and international, the Saúde e Alegria Project was committed to providing training to the community, enhancing their knowledge of traditional cuisine and training as trail guides, among other things. This helped residents learn how to best work with the public, enhancing the experience provided to each visitor and increasing the likelihood of return visits.
The relationship between Atodi and ReFloresta began in 2023, with the first journey. Since then, the bonds between the project and the community have been strengthened, presenting a new form of tourism for each participant, one that involves an even more real connection between the residents and each young person from another part of the country who has decided to connect their lives with Atodi.
"It's been a great help to us, providing what we need, perhaps even tomorrow, building good memories for the generations that are present and the generations to come. Thanks to ReFLoresta, we are expanding our communication and services, bringing young people to learn about our lives, our reality, and how we truly live in Atodi." -
